先日（2014年9月23日）の映画英語アカデミー学会でプレゼンを行った，映画「三銃士」は聞き取りの難易度が高く、台詞も凝っており、英語総合力をUPするのに非常にいい上級者向きのマテだと思います。今回の映画で使われた英検1級語彙は次の通りです。

ためになる面白い表現を挙げてみると、まずbegを使った表現に着眼。
I don’t suppose you have any idea where I could find Athos and Aramis? It’s a wonder it took me so long to catch you. You didn’t! I beg your pardon? You didn’t catch me. And what exactly are you doing here?
「君を捕まえるのにこんなに時間かかるとは！」に対して「捕まってない」というと、”I beg your pardon.”と言い換えしているが、この「もう1度言ってだけませんか」という決まり文句は、反論したり、変なこといった時に誤り場合にも用いられ、また次のシーンの”I beg to offer.”のように強く反論する時に用いる。
What is your name?
Constance.
Constance. Sounds very steadfast.（堅そうだね）
A quality you seem to know little about.（あなたと正反対でしょ）
Oh, I beg to differ. Deep down, I am a hopeless romantic.（何を言う、僕のような純粋な人間に対して）
次に悪の親玉リシュリュウが、奇襲に失敗した彼の右腕に言う皮肉たっぷりのセリフで、ざっくり意訳すると
Somehow I was laboring under the assumption that the plan was for you
to take them by surprise.（奇襲するのは君の方だとずっと思っていたが）
Eminence…
Yes, you are quite fond of that word, aren’t you? Sadly, repeating it doesn’t get you into my good graces. （言い訳しても無駄だ）
Do not fail me again.（2度と失敗するな）
この最後のfailの他動詞用法がいい。ブルースウィルス主演の映画「シックスセンス」でも、患者がドクターに”You failed me.”と言って殺すシーンがあるが、failは、たんに「失敗する」と認識するのではなく、コアの意味「基準(期待値)に満たない」から、「救えない」、「期待に応えない」などの意味に発展して行く。そこで、”Japanese college education is failing the students.”と言えば、「日本の大学教育は生徒の期待に応えて生徒を救っていない失敗作である」という意味になる。
次の服選びのシーンでは、売り手の勧誘のbring out(特質などを引き出す)の使い方と最後の、spoilの意訳が素晴らしい。
I just can’t decide.（迷うな）
Well, if I might point out, this does make you look very dignified, whereas the blue one brings out your dashing side. Fashion favors the bold. （こちらは貫禄が出るのに対して、青は勇ましさを引き立てます）
Equally important. Dignified. Dashing. In the words of King Solomon, I’ll take both! （両方捨てがたいので両方だ！）
A most excellent choice, sir.（さすがお目が高い！）
Darling, you spoil me.
これは、お金を出してくれる彼女に対して三銃士の一人が言った言葉で、字幕では「いつも悪いな」と発想転換して意訳している。
次に裏切られながらも愛している三銃士の一人が彼女を殺すシーンでは、彼を苦しませまいと自殺した彼女に対して言った最後のセリフが泣かせる。
You would spare him, but kill me? （彼は助けても私は殺すの）
At least she died the way she lived, on her own terms.（彼女らしい最後だった）
She did it for me. I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself had I pulled the trigger.（殺していたら苦しみで生きていけなかっただろう）
live withはI could live with that（まあいいか）と言う意味でよく使われるが，この未来完了と“live with”の組み合わせがいい。「人生は自分との戦いだ」の英訳にstruggle with myselfとlive with myselfがあるが、後者の方が奥が深く私にはジーンとくる。つまり、人間というものは自殺したくなる程落ち込んだり、人生のはかなさを感じたり、病気の苦悩から逃れたいと安楽死を頼ろうとするかもしれないが、それらを許さない自力本願の東洋思想を感じる。
